Long-Stroke Pumping Units- Guide Wheels

WSCS supplies polyurethane guide wheels for long-stroke oil pumping units, including carriage, counterweight and side-guide positions. The wheels help control lateral movement, stabilize vertical travel, reduce metal contact and support quieter operation during repeated stroke cycles.

The existing 8 × 4 inch guide wheel can be evaluated for replacement applications. Diameter, width, wheel core, bearings, hardness and tread profile can also be customized from an approved drawing, equipment dimensions or a used sample.

Long-Stroke Pumping Units- Guide Wheels

How Guide Wheels Work

Long-stroke pumping units use a vertically moving carriage or counterweight system inside a tower. Guide wheels contact the rails or guide surfaces to keep the moving assembly aligned throughout each upward and downward stroke.

  • Limit side-to-side and front-to-back movement

  • Maintain stable guide-rail contact

  • Reduce vibration, impact and running noise

  • Protect the carriage, counterweight and tower structure

Guide wheels normally carry lateral guiding forces rather than the full equipment load. Selection should therefore be based on installation position, guide force, rail contact and stroke cycle.

How to Select a Guide Wheel

1. Confirm the Installation Position

Identify whether the wheel guides the carriage, counterweight or another moving assembly. The force direction and adjustment method vary by position.

2. Measure the Complete Wheel

Record outside diameter, tread width, overall width, bore, axle, bearings and mounting clearances. A worn wheel may no longer retain its original dimensions.

3. Review the Guide Rail

Provide rail width, surface shape and condition. Rail wear, joints or misalignment can cause noise and premature tread damage.

4. Confirm the Stroke Cycle

Stroke length, strokes per minute, daily runtime and direction reversal affect material fatigue, bearing life and wheel temperature.

5. Set the Correct Clearance

Insufficient contact can allow sway, while excessive pressure increases deformation, wear and bearing load. Adjustment should follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Polyurethane Tread, Core and Bearings

Polyurethane guide wheels can provide wear resistance, impact cushioning, low noise and rail protection. Formulation also affects resilience, compression set, tear resistance, oil resistance and outdoor-temperature performance.

The core must provide rigidity and accurate bearing support. Outdoor equipment may also require corrosion protection, sealed bearings or replaceable bearing arrangements.

WSCS can combine material, wheel-core and bearing development through its custom polyurethane wheel service.

Customization Capabilities

  • Outside diameter, tread width and overall width

  • Polyurethane hardness and low-noise formulation

  • Wear-, tear-, oil- and weather-resistant options

  • Steel, cast-iron or aluminum wheel cores

  • Bore, axle, bearing and mounting dimensions

  • Flat, crowned, grooved or custom tread profiles

  • Radial runout and paired-wheel dimensional control

  • Prototype, one-piece, small-batch and repeat production

Common Guide Wheel Problems

  • Uneven wear: check clearance, rail alignment, wheel diameter and carriage position.

  • Noise or vibration: inspect bearings, guide pressure, runout and rail joints.

  • Flat spots: review local load, stationary time, temperature and compression behavior.

  • Cracking or chunking: inspect rail edges, hard particles, reversal impact and tear resistance.

  • Delamination: review core preparation, corrosion, oil, moisture and core deformation.

  • Bearing failure: check sealing, lubrication, alignment and contamination.

Replacement and Re-Covering Support

WSCS can evaluate guide wheels from an approved drawing, equipment dimensions, part number or used sample. Replacement development can include restoring the original diameter, matching the bearing and axle, adjusting hardness and reproducing the tread profile.

An existing metal core can be considered for polyurethane re-covering after inspection for cracks, corrosion, deformation and bearing-seat wear.

Testing and Quality Control

  • Outside diameter, tread width and overall width

  • Bore, axle and bearing dimensions

  • Polyurethane hardness and material consistency

  • Concentricity and radial runout

  • Wheel-core condition and tread-to-core interface

  • Paired-wheel dimensional consistency

Application validation should confirm smooth movement, correct guide clearance, acceptable noise and stable wear under the actual stroke cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do guide wheels do in a long-stroke pumping unit?

They guide and stabilize the carriage or counterweight along the tower rails, limiting unwanted lateral movement and reducing direct metal contact.

What does 8 × 4 inch mean?

It commonly refers to wheel diameter and tread width, but the original drawing should also confirm overall width, bore and bearing size.

Can WSCS manufacture from a used wheel?

Yes. Equipment dimensions and rail-clearance information should also be supplied because the tread may be worn or deformed.

Can sealed bearings be supplied?

Suitable bearing and sealing arrangements can be evaluated according to load, speed, dust, moisture and maintenance requirements.

Should guide wheels be replaced as a set?

Wheels operating as a matched group should be inspected together. Replacement should consider diameter differences, wear patterns and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
