How Mecanum Wheels Work

A mecanum wheel has a series of barrel-shaped rollers mounted around its circumference at a fixed 45° angle to the wheel axle. When four wheels are driven independently, each roller generates a force vector at 45° to the direction of travel. The vector sum across all four wheels determines the platform's actual direction of movement — without the chassis needing to steer or rotate.

This produces true holonomic motion: the platform can move forward, backward, laterally left or right, diagonally in any of four diagonal directions, and rotate in place — all from a stationary footprint. This makes mecanum wheels the standard drive solution for AGVs and AMRs operating in narrow aisles, automated warehouses, and any environment requiring precise lateral positioning.

The eight fundamental movement modes of a four-wheel mecanum drive system:

  • Forward / Backward — all four wheels rotate in the same direction

  • Lateral left / Lateral right — diagonal wheel pairs rotate in opposite directions

  • Diagonal forward-left / forward-right — one pair drives, opposite pair is stationary

  • Rotate clockwise / counter-clockwise in place — left and right sides rotate in opposite directions

Left and Right Wheel Configuration

Mecanum wheels are not interchangeable. A correctly functioning four-wheel mecanum drive requires two left-hand (L) wheels and two right-hand (R) wheels, installed in a specific diagonal pattern. Incorrect installation produces incorrect or no lateral movement.

Standard installation layout (viewed from above):

  • Front-left position: Left wheel (L)

  • Front-right position: Right wheel (R)

  • Rear-left position: Right wheel (R)

  • Rear-right position: Left wheel (L)

When viewed from the front of the wheel, the rollers on a Left wheel form a "/" pattern; the rollers on a Right wheel form a "\" pattern. All standard catalogue items and custom orders are supplied as 2L + 2R sets. Single-side (2L only or 2R only) orders are available on request.

How to Select the Right Mecanum Wheel

Step 1 — Determine the load per wheel

Divide the maximum loaded platform weight by four (for a standard four-wheel configuration). Add a 20–30% safety margin to account for uneven load distribution, acceleration forces, and ramp transitions. Select the wheel series whose rated load per wheel exceeds this calculated value.

Step 2 — Select diameter

Larger diameter wheels provide higher ground clearance, lower rolling resistance, and better obstacle handling over minor floor irregularities. For AGV platforms on smooth epoxy floors, 100–152 mm is standard. For heavy-load platforms or slightly uneven surfaces, 200 mm+ is recommended. Diameter also affects the platform's maximum lateral speed at a given motor RPM.

Step 3 — Select roller material

Polyurethane (PU): Best for most industrial AGV applications. Non-marking, low noise, good abrasion resistance. Harder Shore values (88A–92A) for heavy loads; softer (80A–85A) for better floor traction and quieter operation.
Rubber: Higher traction coefficient, better vibration damping, suitable for less-than-perfect floor conditions. Wears faster under continuous high-load operation than PU.
Nylon: Highest hardness and abrasion resistance, lowest rolling noise, suitable for very high-speed light-load applications. Lower traction than PU or rubber.

Step 4 — Confirm bore and keyway

The bore must match your motor shaft or axle diameter precisely. Specify whether a keyway is required (recommended for driven applications to prevent axle slip under load). Standard keyway widths: 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm. Custom configurations available.

Step 5 — Match Left / Right configuration to your chassis layout

Confirm your wheel positions before ordering. Refer to the Left / Right configuration section above. Standard orders ship as 2L + 2R per set. If your chassis uses a non-standard layout, specify per-wheel requirements at the time of order.

Applications

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)

Mecanum wheels are the dominant drive solution for AGVs in automated warehouses, manufacturing assembly lines, and distribution centres. The ability to move laterally without rotating the chassis enables docking to conveyors, shelving, and workstations with sub-centimetre repeatability — critical for pallet transfer, component kitting, and automated loading operations in narrow-aisle environments.

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR)

AMR platforms using mecanum drive can replan routes dynamically while maintaining holonomic mobility, allowing them to avoid obstacles by moving sideways rather than reversing and re-routing. Our wheels are specified for collaborative AMR platforms in electronics manufacturing, pharmaceutical logistics, and food and beverage distribution.

Intelligent Parking Systems

Mecanum-wheeled transport platforms in automated multi-storey parking systems carry vehicles laterally into parking bays without requiring manoeuvring space. This enables parking bay density increases of 30–50% versus ramp-access designs. Heavy-duty series wheels (200 mm+) are required for vehicle carrier platforms.

Precision Positioning and Assembly Platforms

In semiconductor fabrication, aerospace tooling, and precision assembly, mecanum-wheeled platforms transport sensitive loads and dock to fixed stations with encoder-controlled positioning to millimetre accuracy. Our encoder-compatible hub configurations support closed-loop position control directly at the wheel.

Hospital and Cleanroom Logistics

Non-marking PU roller options and full polymer hub configurations are available for mecanum wheels used in hospital logistics robots, pharmaceutical cleanroom AGVs, and medical device assembly environments where contamination control and floor marking are critical requirements.

Heavy Equipment and Tooling Transport

Our heavy-duty steel-hub mecanum wheels (203 mm – 508 mm) are used in aircraft assembly jigs, shipbuilding component transport, and mould and die handling systems where loads of 1,000–4,500 kg per wheel must be manoeuvred precisely in confined spaces.

Drive System Compatibility

Mecanum wheels require four independently controlled drive motors — one per wheel. The following reference parameters are provided to assist your drive system selection. Exact requirements depend on platform weight, target speed, and acceleration profile.

Manufacturing Capability

CNC Precision Machining

All hub bodies are CNC machined in-house from billet aluminium or forged steel. Bore diameter tolerance to ±0.02 mm. Roller mounting positions are machined to hold the 45° angle within ±0.1° — deviations beyond this produce asymmetric movement in service.

Polyurethane Roller Moulding

Rollers are cast or injection-moulded in our dedicated PU production facility. Shore hardness, compound formulation, and geometry are controlled per-batch. Each roller is individually inspected for dimensional accuracy and surface quality before assembly.

Assembly and Balancing

Wheels are assembled and statically balanced before dispatch. Roller-to-roller spacing is verified to ensure even load distribution during rotation. Each wheel is rotated under load on our test bench as part of the standard quality procedure.

Quality System

ISO 9001 certified quality management system. Full traceability of hub material and roller compound by batch number. Dimensional inspection reports available for every production order on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to order left and right wheels separately?

Standard orders ship as a matched set of 2 Left + 2 Right wheels, which is the minimum quantity required for a functional four-wheel mecanum drive. If your chassis layout requires a different combination (for example, a six-wheel platform requiring 3L + 3R), specify your exact requirements at the time of enquiry.

How do I identify which wheel is left and which is right?

Hold the wheel with the hub face towards you. If the rollers run from lower-left to upper-right ("/"), it is a Left wheel. If the rollers run from upper-left to lower-right ("\"), it is a Right wheel. All our wheels are labelled L or R on the hub face.

What is the difference between A-type and B-type mecanum wheels?

A-type and B-type refer to roller offset configurations that affect how the contact patch behaves during lateral movement. A-type (also called "X" configuration) positions rollers symmetrically; B-type offsets them by half a roller pitch. B-type typically provides smoother lateral motion at the cost of slightly higher manufacturing complexity. We produce both configurations — specify your requirement at the time of enquiry.

What floor surface do mecanum wheels require?

Mecanum wheels perform optimally on hard, flat, smooth surfaces: polished epoxy concrete, ceramic tile, steel plate, and smooth hardwood. Surface irregularities, joints, and debris reduce lateral movement efficiency and accelerate roller wear. Minimum recommended floor flatness is FF 50 (superflat) for high-speed AGV applications. For less-controlled environments, specify rubber rollers and consider shock absorber suspension mounts.

Can mecanum wheels be used outdoors?

Standard PU roller wheels are not recommended for outdoor use due to UV degradation, debris ingress, and surface irregularities. For semi-outdoor or covered yard applications, specify EPDM rubber rollers, stainless steel hubs, and sealed IP65-rated bearings. Contact our engineering team to discuss your specific environment.

How do I match mecanum wheels to my motor and controller?

The critical parameters are: wheel diameter (determines linear speed per RPM), bore size (must match motor shaft), and keyway configuration (prevents rotational slip under torque). For encoder-controlled positioning, specify the encoder mounting provision on the hub. Refer to our drive system compatibility table above for reference motor power and voltage ranges by wheel size. Our engineering team can review your full drive specification and advise on compatibility.

How long do the rollers last, and can they be replaced?

Under normal indoor AGV duty — smooth floors, rated loads, standard PU compound — roller service life is typically 12–24 months of continuous operation. Harder PU compounds (Shore 88A+) extend roller life under heavy loads. Individual rollers are replaceable without replacing the entire wheel. Replacement roller sets for all catalogue sizes are available as spare parts.

What is your minimum order quantity for custom mecanum wheels?

Custom mecanum wheels have a minimum order of 4 sets (2L + 2R per set = 16 wheels total) for most specifications. For small-volume prototyping, we can produce 1 set as an engineering sample — lead time is 15–25 working days. Contact us with your drawing to confirm MOQ and pricing for your specific specification.
