Wheels for Warehouse Equipment

Forklifts and Reach Trucks

Forklift wheels must maintain traction and load stability during starting, braking and turning. Buyers should confirm the vehicle model, wheel position, dynamic load, shift pattern, floor and hub dimensions. Continuous operation also requires attention to tread heat, bonding and uneven wear.

Electric Pallet Trucks and Stackers

A pallet truck may use a powered drive wheel, load wheels, pallet rollers and stabilizing wheels. These parts have different functions, bearings and installation dimensions. Outside diameter, width, bore, keyway and loaded vehicle height should be checked before replacement.

AGVs and AMRs

AGV and AMR wheels influence traction, battery use, vibration and positioning. Important requirements include low rolling resistance, outside-diameter consistency, radial runout, paired-wheel matching and resistance to wear during differential or pivot turning.

AS/RS and Shuttle Systems

Rail-guided shuttles and stacker cranes require accurate track and guide wheels. Roundness, bearing fit, rail-joint impact, tear resistance and high travel cycles can be more important than static load alone.

Tow Tractors and Logistics Trains

Long travel distances, trailer loads and gradients increase the need for stable traction, low rolling resistance and controlled heat build-up.

How to Select Material Handling Wheels

1. Identify the Wheel Function

Confirm whether the wheel drives, carries, guides or stabilizes the equipment. The hub, bearing and tread structure depend on its function.

2. Calculate Dynamic Load

Include vehicle weight, battery, payload, load-center movement, acceleration, braking and floor impact. Total weight divided equally by the number of wheels can underestimate the most heavily loaded wheel.

3. Confirm Speed and Duty Cycle

Provide normal and maximum speed, daily runtime, shifts, turning frequency and rest intervals. A wheel designed for intermittent use can overheat during continuous automated operation.

4. Match the Material to the Floor

Polyurethane is commonly selected for industrial floors where load capacity, wear resistance and dimensional stability are required. Rubber provides more cushioning and grip in some conditions, while nylon offers low rolling resistance on suitable smooth floors.

5. Check Dimensions and Precision

Confirm outside diameter, width, hub length, bore, keyway, bearings, flange and bolt holes. AGVs and rail-guided equipment can also require controlled runout, concentricity and paired-wheel diameter.

Polyurethane, Rubber or Nylon?

MaterialMain AdvantagesPoints to Confirm
PolyurethaneHigh load, wear resistance, stability and floor protectionHardness, heat, tearing and moisture
RubberCushioning, grip and low noiseDeformation, rolling resistance and wear
NylonLow rolling resistance and corrosion resistanceNoise, impact and floor protection

Material name or hardness alone does not determine service life. Wheel geometry, formulation, load, floor and duty cycle must be considered together.

Custom Warehouse and Logistics Wheels

WSCS can evaluate custom wheels for equipment manufacturers, automation integrators, distributors and maintenance buyers. Available options include:

  • Custom diameter, width and tread thickness

  • Polyurethane hardness and performance formulation

  • Steel, cast-iron, aluminum or suitable plastic cores

  • Bore, keyway, flange, bolt pattern and bearings

  • Flat, crowned, grooved, V-shaped or flanged profiles

Common Wheel Problems

  • Rapid wear: check load, floor, turning frequency, diameter and material.

  • Chunking: inspect debris, floor joints, pivot turns and tear resistance.

  • Slipping: check contamination, drive-wheel preload, material and acceleration.

  • Delamination: investigate hub preparation, corrosion, torque, heat and core deformation.

  • Reduced AGV runtime: inspect rolling resistance, bearings, alignment and tread deformation.

  • Vibration or positioning error: measure runout, paired-wheel diameter and bearing clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a drive wheel, load wheel and pallet roller?

A drive wheel transmits motor torque, a load wheel carries the vehicle and payload, and a pallet roller supports the fork section of a pallet truck.

Are pallet truck wheels universal?

No. Dimensions, bearings, hubs and equipment versions vary. Confirm the model and complete measurements before ordering.

Why do AGV wheels wear during pivot turns?

Pivot turning creates lateral scrubbing and concentrated edge stress. Material tear resistance, tread profile, load and control settings all affect wear.

Can WSCS manufacture from a used wheel?

Yes. Equipment information and installation dimensions should also be supplied because wear can change the original wheel size.

Can one replacement wheel be ordered?

Selected standard products and custom prototypes can be evaluated for one-piece or small-batch production according to tooling and material requirements.
