Application
WSCS supplies high-speed polyurethane wheels for roller coasters and other amusement rides, including running, guide, upstop, friction drive wheels and press-on tires for new equipment and replacement.
Wheel material, hub, bearing, tread profile and dimensional accuracy are evaluated according to the approved load, speed, track geometry, operating cycle and environment. Customers can submit a drawing, part number, operating data or used sample for review.

High-performance polyurethane can combine dynamic load capacity, abrasion resistance, resilience, low rolling resistance and controlled heat build-up when correctly matched to the ride.
The WSCS material portfolio displayed for this application includes proprietary material names such as Vuklthan® and Blicthan®. Contact WSCS for available material data sheets, trademark information, test methods and application records. For projects evaluated between 0°C and 100°C, request the selected material’s load derating, hardness and test documentation. One temperature claim should not be applied to every polyurethane wheel.
| Wheel Type | Function | Key Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Running Wheels | Carry the main vertical load | Peak load, speed, heat and runout |
| Side-Friction Wheels | Control lateral track position | Side load, profile, preload and bearings |
| Upstop Wheels | Control upward vehicle movement | Uplift load, clearance and dimensions |
| Friction Drive Wheels | Move vehicles through drive sections | Torque, traction, slip and temperature |
| Press-on Tires | Fit onto an existing metal hub | Steel-band bore, width and interference |
Roller coasters: coordinated running, guide and upstop wheel assemblies.
Water and outdoor rides: hydrolysis resistance, corrosion protection and sealed bearings.
Carousels and rotating rides: low-noise support and friction wheels for continuous operation.
Dark rides and track-guided attractions: accurate guidance, low vibration and frequent start-stop cycles.
| Condition | Possible Risk | Selection Priority |
|---|---|---|
| High speed | Heat and dynamic fatigue | Resilience, diameter and tread thickness |
| Peak loads | Compression and hub deformation | Width, hardness and core rigidity |
| Curves and side loads | Guide-wheel wear and heat | Preload, profile and alignment |
| Repeated cycles | Fatigue and limited cooling | Cycles per hour and daily runtime |
| Outdoor or water use | Hydrolysis and corrosion | Material, hub protection and sealing |
| Multi-wheel assemblies | Unequal load distribution | Diameter consistency and runout |

Confirm the wheel position: running, guide, upstop, support or friction drive wheel.
Provide approved loads: vehicle weight, passenger load, vertical, lateral and uplift force per wheel.
Confirm speed and cycles: normal speed, maximum speed, cycles per hour and daily runtime.
Define track contact: rail profile, tread profile, contact width, preload and clearance.
Set tolerances: diameter, width, bearing seat, runout, concentricity and wheel-group consistency.
Describe the environment: indoor or outdoor use, water, temperature, oil and cleaning chemicals.
Hardness alone does not determine wheel performance. Polyurethane formulation also affects resilience, rolling resistance, heat generation, abrasion, tear strength, compression set and hydrolysis resistance.
WSCS can combine material selection with steel, cast-iron or aluminum hubs, custom bores, bearing seats and tread profiles through its custom wheel service. Polyurethane-to-metal bonding is controlled through hub inspection, cleaning, surface preparation, casting, curing and machining.

New and reconditioned wheels: subject to hub inspection and project approval.
Global delivery: export records can be discussed for qualified projects.
Amusement ride wheels are safety-relevant components. A change in material, hardness, dimensions, hub, bearing or tread profile may be a design modification. Final approval, inspection intervals and replacement limits must follow the ride manufacturer’s instructions, approved engineering documents and applicable inspection requirements.
Depending on the project, WSCS can discuss drawings, dimensional and material records, batch identification, runout inspection, prototype testing, traceability, certificates and third-party testing. Contact us for documents available for disclosure.
Excessive heat: review speed, load, tread thickness, preload and bearings.
Cracking or chunking: inspect track joints, side impact, foreign objects and tear resistance.
Delamination: check hub preparation, corrosion, temperature and overload.
Uneven wear: measure wheel-group diameter, alignment and bearing clearance.
Noise or vibration: inspect runout, flat spots, bearings and track condition.
For new or replacement projects, provide drawings, loads, tolerances, ride model, wheel position, part number and maintenance history.
A worn sample should not be copied without restoring the original diameter and confirming the approved design. Existing hubs require structural and dimensional inspection before re-covering.
Typical assemblies use running wheels for vertical load, side-friction wheels for guidance and upstop wheels for uplift control. Some rides also use friction drive wheels.
Yes. An approved drawing is preferred. A used sample must be reviewed with the original specification because wear changes its diameter and profile.
Available certificates, test data and customer references can be discussed subject to confidentiality and disclosure permission.
Re-covering can be evaluated after dimensional, structural and corrosion inspection and project approval.
Send WSCS the approved drawing, wheel position, load, speed, track geometry, environment and documentation requirements. We can evaluate an existing product or develop custom amusement ride wheels for prototype and approved repeat production.
